Members of a number of political parties led by K. Thinakaran, MLA, staged a protest at the Red Cross Junction here on Monday, and later handed over a petition to the district administration seeking a probe into the alleged financial scam at Moppiripalayam Town Panchayat.

They said that officials at the panchayat in cahoots with elected representatives had siphoned Rs. 2 crore. Mr. Thinakaran (DMDK), and the MDMK State youth wing secretary V. Easwaran said that the scam reflected the larger rot in the system.

If such a huge amount could be looted in a town panchayat what would the amount be when it came to municipalities, and municipal corporations.

They condemned the police action against a Right to Information Act activist who sought information on the town panchayat’s accounts. He was languishing in a jail in a false case.

The district administration should come clean on the matter. If it did not, they would continue their protest even if the police denied them permission, they said.

They sought a white paper on the town panchayat’s expenses from 1996.
