Sulur residents have urged the district administration to expand a section of National Highway (NH) passing through their locality to a four-lane to reduce road accidents.
Sulur Block Tiruchi Road Expansion Committee led by P. Mounaswamy, Sulur Union Committee secretary of Communist Party of India (CPI), and M. Arumugam, MLA, submitted a petition during the grievances redress meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday.
The petition said that the 7.5km stretch of the national highway between Kangayampalayam and Chinthamanipudur L&T By-pass Road junction had witnessed a number of accidents, especially in the last two months.
There was adequate land available in the area to facilitate the road expansion.
A row ensued at the Collectorate when the police objected to the committee members meeting the Collector.
The police said that they would allow only five persons to meet him.
When the committee members objected to it, the police allowed all the committee members to meet the District Collector.
Patta
The Devendra Kula Peravai has asked the district administration to ensure the land allotted to Scheduled Castes was equitably distributed to all the castes. According to M. Radhakrishnan Pattakarar, who submitted the petition, seven acres were available at Irugur.
He demanded that members of all communities be given patta.
Special camp
The UDIS (You and the Disabled) Forum has asked the district administration to organise a special camp to provide driving licenses to differently abled persons and registration certificates for modified vehicles.
A petition submitted by forum managing trustee S. Nagappan said that a committee of medical experts and Regional Transport Office personnel should be constituted to organise the camp before September 15.
SFI demonstration
Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a demonstration demanding that the infrastructure at Government aided college in the city be improved.
A petition submitted to the District Collector said that the strength of the college had declined from 1,300 in 2008 to just over 100 during the current academic year.
The students sought the Collector’s intervention in filling teachers’ vacancies, streamlining admission, and setting up a library in the college besides elections to the student’s body.
Corporal punishment
A group of third year students from a polytechnic college in the city requested the district administration to take action against the college management for having allegedly meted out corporal punishment. A petition submitted to the District Collector said that they were constantly being abused by the college staff.
