The need for government schools to pull up their socks was stressed by The NiIgiris Collector, P. Shankar, here on Wednesday.

Presiding over a meeting to review the performance of various government schools, he pointed out that The Nilgiris now occupies the 17th place in the SSLC examinations and 25th in the Plus Two examinations.

Stating that a study has revealed that most of the students who failed had narrowly missed the qualifying mark, he exhorted the teachers to give special attention to weak students. They should try to put The Nilgiris in the top five vis a vis 10th and 12th standard results.

Special prizes

He announced that at the 2014 Republic Day celebrations government schools which had achieved 100 per cent results in the board examinations this year would be given special prizes.

Schools which produce such results next year would be recognised in the Independence Day celebrations.

Chief Educational Officer R.Balamurali and District Education Officers K. Lakshmanan and Easwaramurthy were among those who participated.
