Independence Day was well put to use by students of PSG Institute of Management. Students ensured that not only they, but also the people in homes they visited got a chance to do something meaningful for society.
Students, groups of three each, visited homes in many areas to collect used books under the ‘Gift of Literacy’ campaign of the institute. The campaign is to mobilise books, magazines, novels, and audio-visual learning resources that can be used by students from standards I to Plus-Two.
It will go on for a month and the collected books will be distributed to Government schools to be used by their students and also to the Government libraries to be used as reference material.
And, the response they got from the residents has the students inspired and motivated to take the campaign forward for a full month.
Angeline Margaret, first-year MBA student, along with her team visited the areas behind PSGIM near the PSG Hospital. When she spoke to this reporter in the afternoon she was content with the day’s work and prepared to take up the same work the next day.
“We covered 30 houses in three hours and were able to collect 200 books. We had to make three trips back to the college to drop the books. The response was amazing and people, though enjoying a relaxed day at home on a holiday, sacrificed their television watching time to search for books and give them to us. The books ranged from school to college level, dictionaries and also story books” she said.
Those who needed some time to search for books, told the students to come back on a later date. They were interested in knowing how the books were being distributed and who the beneficiaries would be.
Students visited areas such as Bharathi Colony, Saibaba Colony, Nesavaalar Colony, Saibaba Koil, G.V. Residency, Ramnagar, R.S. Puram, K.K. Pudur, Mullai Nagar, Marudhamalai Road, New Thillai Nagar, Sreevatsa Gradens, Mettupalayam Road, Vadavalli, Tatabad, Kovaipudur, Thudiyalur, Sowripalayam, Singanallur, Hope College, and Perur.
Book donation boxes would be available at vantage points from Friday.
