Coimbatore district administration officials have seized 2,000 kg rice meant for public distribution system on Saturday.

According to the officials, a team led by officers of the Flying Squad received a tip-off stating that a lorry carrying rice bags was on its way to Kerala.

The officials lay in wait for the lorry on the Kuniamuthur-Sundarapuram Road.

Around 5.30 a.m. Saturday, officials said that the team attempted to intercept the lorry but the driver did not stop the vehicle. After a chase, the officials managed to force the driver to stop the vehicle near the Sundarapuram market.

The officials found the vehicle carrying 2,000 kg rice in 40 white plastic bags.

The driver, however, managed to escape. They then seized the lorry and rice and sent the latter to the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godown.

They are in the process of identifying the lorry owner based on the registration number.

Once that is done, the District Revenue Officer would initiate proceedings to punish the guilty.
