The nearly 40-day-old Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) has expedited the processing of applications and despatch of passports by clearing nearly one third of the applications received by it, said Passport Officer S. Sasikumar, here on Tuesday.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Sasikumar said that the numbers of appointments given to applicants per day in both the tatkal and ordinary categories have been increased.

After streamlining the system and ensuring smooth functioning of the new process further, the number of appointments per day both under tatkal and ordinary category, will be further increased, he said. At present, the PSK gives appointments to 280 applicants under ordinary category and 80 appointments under the tatkal category.

The ordinary category appointments are open to applicants 15 days in advance while the tatkal appointments are open from only 8 a.m. of the previous day.

The offices of Police Commissioners in Coimbatore and Salem City and the offices of the Superintendents of Police at Salem Rural, Namakkal, Erode, Tirupur, Coimbatore Rural and the Nilgiris have started sending the police verification reports online.

This has resulted in elimination of the delay caused in preparing reports manually and despatching them.

In addition, the police report on receipt online is directly synchronised with the application file and if police recommendation is positive, the application is directly cleared and sent to the queue for printing the passport. This has resulted in real time issue of passport, Mr. Sasikumar said.

The PSK, that began functioning from August 4, issued lesser number of appointments per day because by then the Passport Office had also issued appointments till August 30.

Decision to restrict appointments at PSK was done in order to avoid accumulation of passport printing work at the Passport office. Now, the Passport Office has stopped issuing appointments and the applicant interface took place only with the PSK. The Passport Office from September 1, 2008 to September 13, 2011 had so far received 2,36,986 applications and had issued 2,16,383 passports.

The PSK from August 4, 2011 to September 13, 2011 had received 2,566 applications and despatched over 860 passports.

In one-third of the cases, applicants under tatkal category received the passport the very next day, if the documents and applications were in order.
