Organs retrieved from brain-dead accident victim

Vital organs were retrieved from a brain-dead patient who suffered severe head injuries in a road accident.

The two-wheeler I. Murugesan (44) of Tamarakulam near Pollachi was riding involved in a head-on collision with another two-wheeler near his residence on Sunday in which he suffered injuries.

After initial treatment at a local hospital, he was transferred to the GKNM Hospital. Scans revealed significant damage to the brain.

He did not show any signs of brain stem function.

He had a repeat CT scan along with dye study on Monday morning after which he was declared brain dead at 11 a.m.

After being explained of his condition, his family consented to donate his organs.

A team of doctors from various hospitals retrieved the organs later in the day.

While the liver and kidneys were allotted to patients at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, the eyes were sent to the Sankara Hospital here.

A former soldier in the Border Security Force, in which he served in Kashmir for 18 years, Murugesan retired two months ago and was working as a private security guard.
