Organs harvested from brain-dead accident victim

The liver, heart valves, kidney, and eyes of a 17-year-old boy who was declared brain-dead following an accident here, was harvested on Wednesday.

Hit by car

R. Balaji, a second year ITI student, was walking along the Mettupalayam Road near Periyanaickenpalayam near here when he was hit by a car. After first aid at a nearby hospital, he was admitted to the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital.

However, his condition began to deteriorate and diagnosis revealed that he had slipped into irreversible coma. He was declared brain dead around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

After being told of his condition, his parents consented to donate his organs.

A team of doctors from KMCH and Global Hospital, Chennai, led by M.N. Siva Kumar, Chief Intensivist, KMCH, retrieved the organs from the patient’s body.

The kidneys were donated to patients at KMCH, the eyes to Aravind Hospital, Coimbatore, the liver and heart valves were donated to patients at Global Hospital, Chennai.
