Vital organs were retrieved from a brain-dead person in the city on Sunday.

A 26-year-old woman was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital here on Friday evening. She had a history of high blood pressure and was on medication. She was hospitalised after she lost consciousness. A CT scan revealed extensive bleeding in the brain stem region. She subsequently suffered brain stem dysfunction. Her family was updated about her condition and counselled about organ donation. After obtaining their consent, a team of doctors retrieved the organs.

Her liver and a kidney were donated to patients at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, her other kidney was donated to a patient at GKNM Hospital and the eyes to Aravind Eye Hospital.
