Vehicles continue to use the diversion road and wait at the railway crossing
The road overbridge on the Irugur – A.G. Pudur stretch should be inaugurated at the earliest, according to joint council of Irugur residents.
The council’s vice-presidents Subramaniam and K. Shiva said that the bridge works were completed in August. The Rs. 36 crore-project was to construct a two-lane road overbridge for nearly two km, with service lanes on either side.
The works started in 2010 and were scheduled to be completed in 18 months, but got over in August this year. The Highways Department had, however, not opened it up for use by the public. Vehicles continued to use the diversion road or the service lane and waited at the railway crossing. Nearly 100 trains, including freight trains, passed by every day.
Works were going on for another road overbridge on the Irugur-Chinthamanipudur stretch. Hence, vehicles needed to pass through two railway crossings. Waiting at the railway crossing led to delays and traffic problems.
“We have submitted memorandum to the State Government and officials concerned. They should take up the issue with the Chief Minister and inaugurate the bridge at the earliest,” said Mr. Subramaniam. It would benefit those travelling from Avanashi Road to Tiruchi Road, the industries in and around Irugur and the public.
