In bid to streamline parking and ease vehicle movement on the busy lanes of R.S. Puram, the traffic police on Thursday started to enforce one side parking. The new arrangement means that vehicles will be allowed to park only on one side of the road which will continue for a month before being shifted to the other side of the road in the next month.
In April, vehicles will have to be parked on the right side of Diwan Bahadur Road (D.B. Road) when travelled towards Cowley Brown Road. The decision to implement one side parking was taken in a meeting conducted by Commissioner A. Amalraj for traffic police on Wednesday.
“The Commissioner directed to enforce one side parking system at R.S. Puram considering lack of space available for parking, and traffic snarls. Vehicles are being parked even right in front of ‘no parking’ boards. Also, parking on both sides of the road eats up the space required for traffic movement. The new system will control unauthorised parking on the sides of the road. People, who violate the parking arrangements, will be fined,” said S. Saravanan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
Mr. Saravanan said that the aim was to convert D.B. Road as a model road. He said that merchants on D.B. Road were in support of the new system. Fourteen cops including an inspector and four home guards will be on duty at R.S. Puram for a week to ensure that the new system is enforced.
Traffic (West) Inspector K.V. Sathasivem said that unauthorised parking on pocket roads linked to D.B. Road would also be cleared. Of the total cops deployed for duty, a constable would monitor three pocket roads. Fines would be imposed for unauthorised parking on east and west sides of Cowley Brown Road, Bashyakarlu Road, Periyasamy Road, Ponnurungam Road, T.V. Swamy Road, Venkatasamy Road, Lokamania Street and Sambandam Road linked to D.B. Road.
The one side parking will also help Public Works Department which is laying underground drainage pipe on D.B. Road. As of now, the works are being done the stretch from Cowley Brown Road to the Eye Foundation on D.B. Road.
