On Wednesday last, the Coimbatore Corporation officials during a routine visit to Rathinapuri to inspect the progress of mass cleaning campaign also took time to inspect the quality of road work.
The officials led by Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy inspected the quality of blue metal, its thickness and size. They also checked if the contractor executing the work had laid the blue metal as per specification.
Mr. Ponnusamy says that the Corporation is keen on ensuring quality of work on the roads, which it has taken up with funds from the State Government under the Integrated Urban Development Mission. The roads where the civic body has taken up works are those that were damaged during the execution of the underground drainage scheme.
In all, the Corporation will repair 125 roads measuring 147 km at Rs. 51.26 crore.
Corporation sources say that the contractors ought to lay bituminous macadam and semi dense bituminous carpet on roads in such a fashion that if they were compacted they should measure around 50 mm and 25 mm respectively. The Commissioner says that the Corporation plans to speed up the road laying work, being taken up in 15 packages, at the earliest so that the residents of the areas concerned have motorable road for monsoon. Mayor Mr. Velusamy says that he has asked senior officials to undertake surprise inspection at spots where the Corporation is executing not only road work but other development works as well. At Rathinapuri, he found the contractor to have used the right blue metal. Deputy Mayor Leelavathi Unni, Chairman, Taxation Committee, R. Prabhakaran were also present.
