The office of the Regional Deputy Director for Town and Country Planning here has issued notices to 115 buildings in the outskirts of Coimbatore city for constructing structures without its approval.
An official of the department told The Hindu on Wednesday that the Corporation approval could be taken for residential buildings up to 4,000 sq.ft. and commercial buildings up to 2,000 sq.ft. coming up within the city limit.
Buildings with higher area or those outside the Corporation limit would have to apply to the Local Planning Authority and the regional office would send it to the Directorate of Town and Country Planning for approval.
However, many buildings here had taken the approval of the local panchayat, which was invalid. Or, they had constructed without approval. The regional office was in the process of identifying such buildings and issuing notices. This included some of the large-scale constructions in the foothills of the Western Ghats. The building owners would be given time to respond. Some had already approached the office asking for more time and some others had submitted drawings for approval.
The regional office would take action based on their response.
The official said that this would be an on-going effort and more buildings constructed without approval would be identified for action.
The Coimbatore Local Planning Authority had issued notices a few weeks ago to buildings in Coimbatore city that had deviated or violated the building norms or had constructed without approval. It had taken action on some by sealing the building or demolishing it.
