Coimbatore will experience normal southwest monsoon, the Agro Climate Research Centre at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has predicted. The Centre that released its prediction on Wednesday said that like Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri would experience normal rainfall.

Tirupur in Western Tamil Nadu alone is expected to experience deficit rainfall.

The Centre had predicted that during the southwest monsoon season that extends from June to September, Coimbatore was expected to get 213 mm rainfall as against its long-term average of 189.9 mm. The Nilgiris was expected to experience 772 mm rainfall (average 759.9 mm), Erode 200 mm (average 229.8 mm), Namakkal 376 mm (average 339.3 mm), Salem 451 mm (average 440.6 mm), Dharmapuri 372 mm (average 393.4 mm) and Krishnagiri 412 mm (average 399 mm).

Tirupur was expected to receive 123 mm, while its average rainfall for the monsoon season was 154.8 mm.

The Centre said that if the rainfall predicted was plus or minus 19 % the average rainfall, it had treated it as normal monsoon and if the rainfall predicted was either plus or minus 19 to 59 % , it treated it as deficit rainfall.

Though Tamil Nadu was a rain shadow region to southwest monsoon, the State received 32 % of its annual rainfall between June and September.

The Centre also said that it had predicted the rainfall based on Southern Oscillation Index of summer season and sea surface temperature values of Pacific and Indian oceans using an international weather predicting software.
