Widening of National Highways (NH) 47 from Chengapalli to Neelambur and from Madukkarai to Walayar is expected to be completed by July 2014.
An official of the NHAI said completion of works on section one — from Chengapalli to Neelambur — requires four months for completion (120 working days) and section two — from Madukkarai to Walayar — needs seven months.
If funds are available, the contractor is confident of completing the project by the end of July. All the legal issues have been cleared and works have been expedited. Meanwhile, some of the industrial and voluntary organisations are expected to join hands and focus on specific infrastructure works in the city. Widening of NH 47 has been given several extensions and it should not be delayed any further.
There does not seem to be any major progress in the works on the Chengapalli-Madukkarai section. Works on the road just beyond Walayar is on in full-swing. This is one of the major junctions for cargo movement and the stretch from Madukkarai to Walayar needs focus, says a leading industry owner here.
The NHAI started the works to six-lane the road from Chengapalli to Neelambur and four-lane it from Madukkarai to Walayar in 2010 at a total outlay of Rs. 850 crore.
However, with slow down in works, the concessionaire was given time till the end of July to complete the works and it was extended to end of December, 2013. Then, it was expected that the project will be completed by March next year. Now, it is likely to be over by July.
