In an effort aimed at providing sewerage solution and preventing pollution in River Bhavani, a team of three project officers from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation visited Mettupalayam on Friday.

According to the Mettupalayam Municipal Chairman D. Satheesh Kumar, the team visited Sreerangarayanpalayam, one of the points where untreated municipal sewage entered River Bhavani. Then, it visited the municipal dump yard on Sirumugai Road.

Objective

Sent by the Director of Municipal Administration, the team’s objective was to study the waste water treatment facility in the town. It asked questions about sewage treatment mechanism, the number of public convenience facilities, the number of households without toilets, etc. Mr. Kumar said that the team was shocked to learn that the civic body was forced to let out untreated sewage in the absence of treatment facility. It promised to report to the Director of Municipal Administration.

At the time of inspection, Mettupalayam Municipal Commissioner in-charge R. Malligai, Vice Chairperson Rama Selvi and a few councillors were present.
