A newly-constructed library building under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam at Muthampalayam village in Erode district remains unutilised for long.

The State Government had constructed the building during 2006-2007 and made it functional by appointing a librarian.

Since the tenure of the librarian ended, the library remains closed for the past few months.

The district authorities here have not taken any steps to make the library functional again for reasons best known to them.

“At a time when the government is aggressively promoting reading habit among the people, the district authorities continue to pay little attention to make the library functional. A large number of children in the village and nearby areas will benefit if the library is opened again.”

“We have met the officials at the Collectorate on several occasions urging them to appoint a new librarian and keep the facility open for the public. We have represented this issue to the elected representatives also. But, no fruitful efforts have been made to sort out the problem,” people said.

When contacted, officials said that the previous librarian was asked to work again in the library.
