It has also equipped these centres particularly where lakes and boat rides are held, with new life jackets. Many of the old boats also have been replaced.

According to officials in Yercaud, after the boat tragedy in Thekkady, stringent safety norms are being adhered to in the tourist centres in Tamil Nadu.

The Yercaud tourism centre also has received 300 life jackets for riders.

A senior official said that no tourist would be permitted to take a boat ride without life jacket on.

Though the lake has a good track record on safety barring one incident in which a boy drowned more than two decades ago, the officials here are unwilling to take a chance.

The tourism office has 50 pedal boats and 6 rowing ones.

During the peak tourist season an average 1,500 tourists will be enjoying boat rides in this sprawling lake situated at the heart of the hill station.

Scorching summer and poor rain this year have shrunk the water level in the lake by more than 6 feet. Hence the authorities have to erect a new wooden platform to facilitate the riders to have easy access to boats.
