The new building for the Big Bazaar Street police station on Vysial Street on a sprawling 5,500 sq feet, constructed at a cost of Rs. 49.07 lakh by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation, was inaugurated by the Director General of Police (Law and Order), Letika Saran, on Thursday.
Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), K. Radhakrishnan, City Police Commissioner C. Sylenda Babu, Inspector General of Police, West Zone, P. Sivanandi, Deputy Commissioners of Police P. Nagarajan (Law and Order), N. Kamini (Crime), E.S. Uma (Head Quarters) and S. Nizamuddin (Traffic) attended.
The station was functioning in a building that was in a dilapidated condition and was moved to a temporary makeshift arrangement at Kempatty Colony.
The new building is equipped with all facilities.
Ms. Saran said that steps were being taken to set up all necessary headquarter units needed for the relatively-new Tirupur police district at the earliest in an attempt to strengthen the policing in the region. “As part of it, units like District Crime Records Bureau (DCRB) and Special Branch will be constituted,” she added.
She was speaking to reporters at Avinashi on Thursday evening.
Ms Saran said that plans were also afoot to increase the police strength in the district multi-fold by allocating more number of personnel based on the classification given to law and order police stations based on the workload.
Answering a query, Ms. Saran said that possibility of creating more police stations in Tirupur district could not be ruled out completely.
Earlier, Ms. Saran inaugurated the new police quarters constructed on an expanse of 2.25 acre at Avinashi.
The facility was constructed by Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation Limited.
Of the 57 dwellings built, three were meant for Inspectors, six for Sub-Inspectors and 48 for head constables/constables.
