The police arrested members of Naam Tamilar Katchi here on Friday when they attempted to block trains at the Coimbatore Railway Junction. The cadre raised slogans and staged a demonstration in front of the junction urging the Centre to roll back the hike in railway ticket fare and fuel price.

The police prevented the cadre led by party district secretary R. Tamilselvan from entering the junction.

“These price hikes are badly affecting the common people, especially those from the middle class and the financially weaker sections of society,” Mr. Tamilselvan said. The Race Course police booked the cadre under Section 151 (Preventive Arrest) of the Code of Criminal Proceedings. They were released later in the day.

In Tirupur, eleven cadre of the party were arrested when they tried to enter the Tirupur railway station to block trains. K. Shanmugasundaram, district secretary (Tirupur South) of the party, told reporters that the Centre should immediately roll back the increase made in the prices of petroleum products as it led to inflation.

On the passenger fare hike, the agitators said the step was a big blow to the middle class people and the labourers who use trains every day to commute from their homes to workplaces.
