The Coimbatore City Police are on the lookout for five persons suspected to be involved in the murder of K. Shanmugam (72) of Kottur.

According to the police, Shanmugam’s wife Kanniyammal (65) had a dispute with her neighbour Megala over fetching water on April 4. This led to a scuffle and Megala had allegedly assaulted Kanniyammal who was admitted to the Government Hospital at Kottur. Later that day, Megala’s relatives Vizha Moorthy, Rajesh, Shankar and Mahendiran picked a quarrel with Shanmugam.

The group allegedly tied up Shanmugam and assaulted him and ransacked his house.

As Shanmugam did not return home even on the next day, Kanniyammal went in search of him and found him with extensive injuries.

After initial treatment at the GH in Kottur, he was transferred to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). However, Shanmugam went missing from CMCH. He later got admitted to the Kottur GH on April 11 and was shifted to the Pollachi GH the next day. However, he died later that day.

Based on a complaint by Kanniyammal, the Kottur police have registered a case and invoked Sections 302 (murder), 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code.

They got into a fight after consuming liquor and Rajnath was stabbed in the melee. He has been admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
