Traffic congestion is on the rise in this city alongside the increase in vehicle population.

Everyday residents of this city and vehicle users are forced to waste time waiting at traffic signals while attempting to cross roads.

Lauding the efforts to construct a grade separator at Gandhipuram, vehicle users say that it is high time the city gets more grade separators (access to multiple direction over existing junctions), and flyovers on important roads across traffic signals.

“To travel from Singanallur to Gandhipuram one has to pass about 10 traffic signals. The duration for which we have to wait at many signals is over two minutes. One has to start early from home or reach the destination late,” says R. Rengaraj of Vellalore, and adds that other routes in the city are no exemption.

The increase in traffic signals has added to people’s owes but they are unavoidable), says K. Kathirmathiyon, member of the District Road Safety and Traffic Advisory Committee.

He felt that grade separators should be established at Lakshmi Mills Junction, Hope College, and Masakalipalayam Road junction on Avinashi Road, the Sungam junction that has seven traffic signals, Lanka Corner on Tiruchi Road, Saibaba Colony junction on Mettupalayam Road, Thadagam Road, and Lawley Road junction, and Ganapathy Junction on Sathy Road.

“Efforts should be taken to construct a flyover in these junctions, and make them part of grade separators in the future,” he suggested. He felt that flyovers should be constructed at PSG and Airport junctions on Avinashi Road and Ramanathapuram and Singanallur junctions on Tiruchi Road.

He said that proposals for constructing flyovers and grade separators in the city were sent to the Government of Tamil Nadu at various stages about three to six years ago.

“More number of flyovers and grade separators would benefit vehicle users. It would make regulating traffic easier too, ,” said the Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) T.K. Rajasekaran.
