Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply S.P. Velumani on Sunday inaugurated the scheme here to give silt removed from dams to farmers.

The Minister said at the inaugural that following Chief Minister’s instructions to desilt dams and tanks and the State Government earmarking ₹100 crore for the purpose under the ‘Kudimaramathu’ scheme, the first programme was held at the Aliyar Dam.

Desilting would increase the dam’s storage capacity by 0.5 thousand million cubic feet.

Nutrient-rich

The silt removed from the dam would benefit farmers as it was nutrient-rich.

Similar work was under way in many tanks and water bodies across the State, he said.

Mr. Velumani said that in addition to the ₹100 crore, the Government had allotted ₹300 crore under the Kudimaramathu scheme.
