The committee formed by the State Government to recommend minimum wages for non-apprentice workers in textile mills in the State is expected to submit its report in six months.
Chairman of the committee and Deputy Commissioner of Labour, Coimbatore, P. Marimuthu, told The Hindu here on Tuesday that the committee held two preliminary meetings and the third one was held here on Tuesday. The committee members visited two textile mills here on Tuesday and distributed questionnaires to a cross section of workers, including permanent, badli and temporary workers, to get their feedback.
It also had a meeting with members of the Joint Action Council of the Coimbatore and Erode Districts Textile Mill Workers' unions.
The State Government had already fixed the minimum wages for apprentices working in textile mills in the State. In order to finalise the minimum wages for workers other than the apprentice, a state-level committee was formed with six members.
The committee would hold its next meeting on August 28 in the Southern States. Its members would visit some of the mills there. The objective was to visit textile mills in different areas, get feedback from all sections of workers and from different types of mills, he said.
