Members of the Kurichi-Vellalore Residents’ Association found bags of used syringes, vials, cotton, needles, etc. dumped along the southern boundary of the Vellalore dump yard.K.S. Mohan, a member of the Association, said that a look at the items therein suggested that the medical waste could have been dumped not more than a day ago. The members then informed the Coimbatore Corporation and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials.
Mr. Mohan said that the members suspected the involvement of a few scrap dealers in the vicinity as they dealt with wastes. Sources in the Coimbatore Corporation said that as soon as they got to know of the medical waste in the dump yard, they informed Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Commissioner G. Latha, both of whom had instructed them to lodge a complaint with the Podanur Police.
In their complaint, the Corporation officials had stated that the police should investigate as to who was behind the dumping of waste in the yard, which was meant only for municipal waste.
