The incident comes hardly a week after a lorry from Kerala, which was about to dump waste in Vellalore, was seized by the residents

The members of the Vellalore-Kurichi Residents’ Association found a lorry load of medical waste dumped along a road, located around 2 km from the Vellalore dump yard.

This comes hardly a week after the residents seized a lorry from Kerala that was about to dump waste in Vellalore.

According to V. Eswaran and S. Daniel of the MDMK, the medical waste was found dumped along the Coimbatore by-pass road on Kanjikanampalayam-Chettipalayam Road. The bags contained syringes, needles, vials, etc.

One of the packets bore the sign of Ken Biolinks, a company that is in-charge of collecting and safely disposing medical waste in Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts.

Another paper, which appeared to be a prescription, suggested that it belonged to Dinesh Hospital, Arni Road, Vellore.

N. Sivasubramaniam, plant in-charge Ken Biolinks, said that he was surprised to learn that medical waste from Vellore had landed in Coimbatore. His company serviced around 250 hospitals and clinics in the two districts and processed around one-and-a-half to two tonnes medical waste a day.

The company distributed waste collection bags to hospitals and clinics and one such bag could have landed in Coimbatore.

Complaint lodged

Meanwhile, Mr. Eswaran said that he had lodged a complaint with the Podanur Police. The dumping of medical waste in the area angered the residents.
