A large quantity of medical waste, believed to be brought from Kerala via Anaikatti, was burnt near Chinna Thadagam here on Wednesday. The medical waste, including expired tablets, used cotton, syringes and medicines, were burnt at a vacant place close to the reserve forest.

Sources in the locality said that Wednesday's burning of medical waste was third incident reported in the area in the recent past.

They said that the dumping and burning of medical waste was done in a deserted area along the road connecting Varapalayam and Ponnuthu Amman Kovil.

The waste materials were found burning on Wednesday evening. At least a small truck load of waste would have been burnt, said a resident from the area.

The police, however, said that they were not aware of the incident. A police officer said that information will be passed to the police check post at Mankarai close to Kerala boarder at Anaikatti.

Forest Department officials who came to know about the incident collected information from people in the locality as the burning took place near forest.
