The South India Textile Manufacturers' Association has appealed to AIADMK general secretary and Chief Minister-designate Jayalalithaa to initiate action to ease the power crisis, which has crippled the industrial activities in the State.
Congratulating Ms. Jayalalithaa for her party's landslide victory in the Assembly polls, Association convener M.S. Mathivanan said that the textile industry was badly hit due to the power crisis and the rise in the prices of cotton yarn. The frequent disruptions in power supply had affected the productivity of the textile sector, forcing a number of units to reduce their operations and a few units to shut down.
The Central and State governments, Mr. Mathivanan accused, did not accord adequate importance to the domestic textile industry and failed to initiate any concrete efforts to control the prices of cotton and cotton yarn. As a result, the prices of cotton yarn skyrocketed in the recent past, affecting the powerloom, handloom, knitting and other yarn consuming industries in the State. A number of units were forced to stop production due to the higher prices of yarn. This had also rendered thousands of weavers in the State jobless.
Mr. Mathivanan appealed to the AIADMK general secretary to initiate appropriate action to bring down the prices of the cotton yarn and ensure adequate power supply to the textile industries in the State.
