Hundreds of AIADMK activists observed a fast at Gandhipuram here on Monday in protest against jailing their leader Jayalalithaa.
Led by Coimbatore Mayor P. Rajkumar, over 3,000 party activists participated in the agitation wearing black dresses.
Mr. Rajkumar said that the protest was against the unfair treatment meted out to Jayalalithaa.
The verdict was a result of a massive conspiracy hatched against her.
The move to destroy the party and end the political career of their leader would not succeed, Mr. Rajkumar said adding that the protest would continue in a peaceful manner.
At the protest venue, many were seen holding Jayalalithaa’s picture, and shouting slogans in support of her, and against DMK leaders, and Subramanian Swamy.
Some of the activists underwent a tonsure at the venue.
Former Coimbatore Mayor S.M. Velusamy, Deputy Mayor Leelavathi Unni, zonal chairpersons of the Coimbatore Corporation, and senior party functionaries were present at the venue.
Demonstrations were held in several parts of the district. No untoward incidents have been reported from anywhere.
In Mettupalayam, K. Santhanam, the joint district secretary of the labour wing of the AIADMK, said that they would continue to wear dresses till Ms. Jayalalithaa was released from prison.
