Mata Amritanandamayi Math launched its cleanliness drive in Coimbatore on Saturday.
A release from the organisation said ‘Amala Bharatam, Amrita Bharatam' saw more than 600 students and staff of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University engage themselves in cleaning various public places. They cleaned Ukkadam bus stand and its neighbourhood, Kuniamuthur town and the stretch from Ettimadai Pirivu to K.K. Chavadi.
The purpose of the cleaning drive was to create social awareness on humanity's debt to our beautiful earth and nature. The aims of the project, as conceived by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, were: to embrace new practical initiatives to clean India, promote health through hygiene, sort garbage and properly dispose of the waste and to make people aware of the need to maintain environmental cleanliness.
Mata Amritanandamayi announced the project during her 57th birthday. The cleanliness drive would cover the entire country. The release added that the Math would also construct public toilets and install trash cans in Government schools and along roads. There would also be efforts to create awareness through campaigns on keeping highways and other roads litter-free.
