A mass cleaning campaign is being taken up at primary health centres (PHCs) and other Government health institutions from August 1 to 15.

The Department of Public Health has ordered the campaign to coincide with the monsoon rains, according to N. Ragupathy, Deputy Director of Health Services, Tirupur district who is holding additional charge of Coimbatore district.

All the primary health centres and health sub-centres have been instructed to clean up their premises, white-wash their buildings and plant saplings also, wherever adequate space was available, he added.

Breast feeding

Further, the Health Department was also observing the World Breast Feeding Week (August 1 to 7) by conducting sensitisation programme at PHCs and other Government health institutions.

The importance of breast feeding for the first six months after birth would be explained to pregnant women through awareness programmes at PHCs. They would also be advised not to give artificial milk to the baby in the initial months, Dr. Ragupathy said.

Village Health and Nutrition Day was observed on all Fridays at the PHCs where such topics were addressed regularly, he added.
