A group of six masked men stormed into a house, with four dwelling units, at Solavampalayam near Kinathukkadavu late on Wednesday night and decamped with gold jewellery weighing nearly 35 sovereigns and Rs.3.5 lakh in cash.

It is learnt that the gang first attacked co-operative bank manager Narayanasamy, one of the residents of the dwelling, and also his son Sabari Aditya, who raised an alarm on seeing his father being attacked.

The gang dragged Narayansamy into the house of S. Umasankar (45), a cellular phone dealer, and started attacking his relatives Gunasekaran and Sachinkumar in the house to terrorise the women. Seeing this, Madhavi (42), wife of Umasankar, parted with her 15 sovereigns of jewellery and the safe vault keys. The gang also robbed 2.5 sovereign jewellery from Anitha, another resident in the building.

The gang took Rs.3.5 lakh cash from the safe vault, and 35 sovereigns of jewellery altogether and fled the spot.

The injured were rushed to a hospital. The police officials inspected the scene of crime and pressed sniffer dog, and forensic experts into service. Special teams have been formed to apprehend the accused.

Man killed in accident

J. Manikandan (20) of Tiruvar, employed in a private company near Karumathampatti, was killed in a road accident on Wednesday. It is learnt that he lost control over the motorcycle he was riding. The vehicle rammed a tree and a wall, throwing off the victim causing his instant death.
