The market for technical textiles in the country is expected to double in the next five years, presenting huge growth opportunities for the textile sector, South India Textile Research Association Deputy Director K.P. Chellamani has said.
He was speaking at a conference on “Technical Textiles – Indian Possibilities” organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) – Erode Zone in association with the Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) and SITRA here on Monday.

“The market for the technical textiles will be around Rs. 86,000 crore in the next five years, doubling from the present level of Rs. 43,000 crore,” Mr. Chellamani said.
The boom was expected to happen in all the 12 areas of technical textiles including the medical textiles.
The SITRA was designated as the Centre of Excellence for Medical Textiles by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, he added.
The growth of the Indian healthcare sector is expected to be around 20 percent per annum, as the per capita spending for health is on the rise. This will help fuel the growth of the medical textiles, he said.
Mr. Chellamani called upon the textile industry to take advantage of the opportunities available in the field of technical textiles.
Sessions
Sessions were held on technical textiles and its prospects, possibilities and Government incentives, medical textiles, special yarn finishing for technical textiles, simple projects in technical textiles, non-wovens in medical textiles and special finishes of fabrics and non-woven manufacturing as a part of the conference.
Resource persons from the textile industry and the government agencies conducted the sessions.
