Marathon to popularise Tamil meet theme

Bharathiar University in collaboration with Tamil Maiyam will organise here on June 12 a “Pirappokum Thozhamai Marathon” to popularise the theme - “Pirappokum Ella Uyirukkum” – of the World Classical Tamil Conference, Vice-Chancellor of the university C. Swaminathan said here on Friday.

Addressing a press conference, he said the marathon would be conducted under various categories and would begin from the Police Recruit Grounds at 6.30 a.m.

Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi would flag off the marathon.

It would be a 10 km race for men, six km run for women and male students, and three km for girl students.

The minimum age for participation was 14 years and there was no maximum age limit. Winners would be given prizes. The total prize amount was around Rs. 3 lakh.

Those interested could collect the registration forms from Kannan Departmental Stores, Sri Annapoorna Hotel, Jenney Club, or from the Nehru Stadium from June 5. Efforts were on to make the forms available in schools.

Filled-in forms should be handed over to NSS volunteers who would be available at the stadium from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all days from June 5 to 11.

Similar marathons were being planned in Erode on June 10, in Tirupur on June 13, and in Udhagamandalam on June 17.

The organisers are expecting at least one lakh participants.
