Man trampled to death by elephant

Radhakrishnan (45), a watchman in an estate bungalow near Gudalur, was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Wednesday morning when the victim was returning home at dawn after night shift.

The victim was accompanied by another person Azhagesan (47). It was learnt that when they were near a school, the elephant emerged from the coffee estate and attacked them. While Azhagesan escaped with injuries, Radhakrishnan died on the spot. Radhakrishnan is survived by his wife, one son and daughter.

The body was handed over after post-mortem and further investigations are on. Forest Department on Wednesday handed over Rs 25,000 to the bereaved family members and the remaining Rs 2.75 lakh compensation would be handed over after adhering to the procedural and legal formalities, officials said.
