Man killed in elephant attack

L. Kaliappan (50), a resident of Colony Pudur, belonging to a tribal community was killed in an elephant attack inside the forest at Gopanari East Beat in Thudiyalur Section of the Perianaickenpalayam Forest Range on Saturday evening.

According to Forest Department officials, the victim had taken his cattle to graze around 100 metres inside the forest. He failed to notice the presence of an elephant, which trampled him to death. He died on the spot.

Heavy rain and presence of elephants led to the body being recovered only late in the night.

The body was taken to the Government Hospital at Mettupalayam on Sunday for post-mortem.

Forest Department has released an immediate compensation amount of Rs.25, 000 to his family. Another Rs. 2.75 lakh would be granted shortly. This is the second death in the district this year due to elephant attacks, which have left three injured.
