The Coimbatore District Rural Police have arrested P. Kanagaraj (60), a resident of Madhampatti Ammal Thottam near V. Kaliapuram in Anaimalai, on the charges of murdering his wife and injuring their son over a property dispute.

According to the police, Kanagaraj’s wife Thangamani, and their son K. Ravichandran (45) had a total of 13.5 acre registered in their names. This had caused frequent quarrels among them as Kanagaraj had allegedly demanded that the land be transferred to his name.

Thangaraj had come home on Saturday around 3 p.m. in an inebriated condition and stabbed Thangamani and Ravichandran with a knife.

Hearing their cries, neighbours rushed to their aid and immediately took them to a hospital in Anaimalai for treatment.

However, Thangamani did not respond to treatment and died at the hospital. Ravichandran was reported to be in a stable condition.

The Anaimalai police have registered a case. Sections 302 (murder) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) of the Indian Penal Code have been invoked.

Further investigations are under way.
