City Police have arrested Sakthivel (37), a painter, on charges of marrying five women. According to the police, a 25-year-old woman filed a complaint recently against Sakthivel, whom she had married in September last year at Perur.

She accused him of torturing her by showing her obscene videos and harassing her. Unable to bear the torture, she left him. However, she came to know that he had married another woman. Sakthivel allegedly threatened to kill her.

She submitted a petition to the City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan.

A team led by Inspector Manickam found that Sakthivel had married three women before the complainant between 2002 and 2013. All of them had left him allegedly due to Sakthivel torturing them.

All Woman Police Station (West) have registered a case and invoked Sections 494 (Marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife), 498 (enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a married woman) and 506 (ii)(threat to cause death) of the Indian Penal Code.

He has been remanded in custody.
