Man held, firearm seized, jewellery recovered

Coimbatore police team intercepts Rahul alias Ranjithkumar (27), of Alathur in Palakkad district of Kerala, wanted for waylaying and robbery

Special teams of the Coimbatore City Police arrested Rahul alias Ranjithkumar (27) of Alathur in Palakkad District of Kerala and recovered 27 sovereigns of gold jewellery, cash of Rs. 1 lakh and a countrymade revolver.

Following incidents of robbery, house break-in and thefts, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) K. Sugumar constituted special teams to investigate the crimes.

A special team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime — East), V. Geetha and Inspectors Maheswaran, Suresh and Sakthivel conducted random checks and stepped up vehicle checks for persons who were moving around at odd hours under suspicious circumstances.

During a vehicle check at Saravanampatty on Monday, the teams intercepted a person on suspicion and found him to be Rahul alias Ranjithkumar who was wanted in connection with waylaying and robbery of Velumayil.

He was taken into custody and inquiries revealed that the accused was involved in as many as five cases of crime in Coimbatore City Police limits and also in cases pertaining to Periyanaickenpalayam police limit.

Police also recovered jewellery, cash and a revolver.

Investigation is on to ascertain the involvement of the accused in other cases and for recovering the stolen property.
