The police on Saturday arrested a man and recovered the 28 sovereigns gold jewellery that he had stolen from a house at Kuruchi Housing Unit Phase-II on Thursday night.

On Thursday night, two unidentified men broke into the house of Yogaraj (42), a travels agent and bakery owner, and fled with the jewellery and some money.

On Saturday, the police narrowed down on J. Salim (28) of Podanur and arrested him.

It is learnt that he was previously booked for petty cases including minor thefts. After the jewellery was recovered from him, he was produced before the court and lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.

Podanur Crime Inspector N. Velmurugam said that they were on the lookout for Salim’s accomplice. Special teams were also on the job to nab unidentified persons who committed similar burglaries – by attacking the occupants of the house – at five other places in and around Podanur earlier this week.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Pravesh Kumar said that the police had increased night patrolling in vulnerable areas in that locality to curtail movement of strangers to combat crime.
