Nearly four years after a man from Karur district cheated a woman running a roadside eatery near Saibaba Colony and her daughter by taking away Rs. 5 lakh from them, the victim reportedly caught hold of the man in the city during the late hours of Tuesday and took him to the police station.

City Crime Branch (CCB) police said that I. Nagamani (45) of K.K. Pudur at Saibaba Colony was a roadside vegetable vendor. Her elder daughter I. Suguna (26) is a graduate.

The accused A. Sivendran (47), of Mavuthur village in Karur district, was an uncle of the girl’s friend at college.

It is learnt that he took money from the two victims from July to October 2011. He is said to have initially got Rs. 1.5 lakh from them to help them establish a vegetable business.

Textile business

A few days later he told the women that there was a heavy loss in the business and that it could not be continued. Then, he reportedly got Rs. 3 lakh for a textile export business and told them a few days later that the business, too, met with a loss. As last instalment, he got Rs. 50,000 from them promising to get financial assistance for Suguna’s higher education from a trust.

Police said that after October 2011 Sivendran did not meet the two women and was reportedly giving excuses when they asked him to return the money. He also did not answer their calls.

According to the police, Suguna spotted Sivendran at the Coimbatore Junction and took her to the City Crime Branch Police in the late hours of Tuesday.

The man was booked under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code on Tuesday, produced before court on Wednesday and lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
