Man arrested for assault in Coimbatore

Selvapuram Police have arrested K. Siddiq (34) on charges of assaulting a woman with weapons. The police said that on January 17, Siddiq teased R. Padmavathy, 30, a resident of Selvapuram North Housing Unit.

He had been teasing her for a while. On Thursday last, when the woman was returning home from work, he asked her mobile phone number. The woman refused, chided and warned him against misbehaving with her. Angered by her resistance, he took out the knife he had and assaulted Padmavathy.

Her neighbours rushed her to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Based on her complaint, the police arrested Siddiq and sent him for remand.

Killed in accident

M. Sharif, 43, a resident of Poonga Nagar, Karumbukkadai, was killed in a road accident on Friday. According to the Traffic Investigation Wing, West, Sharif was killed when he lost control of the two-wheeler he was riding on, hit a stone on Goodshed Road and sustained head injuries. The police said that he was declared dead on arrival at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. S. Manawaji, 34, the pillion rider, sustained injuries.

Woman lodges complaint

Twenty-two-year-old Sakthi of Aliyar has lodged a complaint with the All Woman Police, Pollachi, alleging that Sakthivel, working as junior assistant at Puliampatty Panchayat, had reneged on his promise of marrying her.

She told the police that on the promise of marriage, he had exploited her on several occasion.

He refused to even meet or talk to her once he learnt that she would not be able to conceive. He had recently attempted to marry another girl, she said in the complaint.

Arrested

Thudiyalur Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy on charges of stealing iron rods.

The police said that the boy, working at an iron stop in Kavundampalayam, had attempted to steal the rods. He was caught red-handed. Following a complaint by the shop owner, the police have arrested the boy. They have registered a case.

CDs seized

Ukkadam Police have arrested M. Samsukani, 33, on charges of selling compact discs containing pirated prints of latest Tamil films.

The police said that they arrested Samsukani near a musical shop on Ukkadam Bypass Road and seized 59 CDs, including 11 with pornographic content. The police have registered a case in this connection.

Gamblers held

Selvapuram Police have arrested seven persons on charges of gambling. They said that during routine rounds, they arrested four persons from near Angalamman Temple and three from near a school in Chokkampudur. The police have registered cases against the seven. They also seized cash.
