The work of returning back the deposit amount to the candidates who had filed nominations for contesting in the countermanded local body elections is in full swing in the district.

A majority of the candidates had already taken back the deposits, according to official sources.

The State Election Commission had announced election to various local bodies in the State in two phases on October 17 and 19 last year.

However, the Madras High Court quashed the notification issued by the Commission for the conduct of local body election for non-compliance of the Tamil Nadu Panchayat (Elections) Rules, 1995.

Prior to the High Court order, candidates had filed nomination papers for the Salem Corporation, four municipalities of Attur, Narasingapuram, Mettur and Edappadi; 33 town panchayats and other rural local bodies in the district.

Nomination papers

Besides, the candidates of political parties, a large number of independents too had filed nomination papers by remitting the deposits ranging from ₹100 to ₹2,000 for the post of councillor of village panchayat to the Corporation.

The State Election Commission later ordered the district authorities to return back the deposit money to the concerned candidates. The authorities are at present involved in the work of returning back the deposit amount by cheque and cash.

The candidates who had filed nomination papers for the post of ward councillors of Salem Corporation collected back the same at the zonal offices situated in Suramangalam, Hasthampatti, Kondalampatti and Ammapettai.
