The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) is trying to provide uninterrupted power supply to industries for a specific duration during daytime.
It has started trying this out in some textile mills that have dedicated feeders and at the SIDCO Industries Estate.
Chief Engineer of TANGEDCO A. Thangavelu told The Hindu that it already had instructions to ensure four hours of uninterrupted power supply to industries. Coimbatore region, which included Coimbatore, Tirupur and the Nilgiris districts, had about 110 feeders that had predominantly industries connections.
The TANGEDCO tried to provide six hours of uninterrupted supply to these feeders in two slots of three hours uninterrupted supply in each. In the industry feeders, if there was four hours of power cut, then it was ensured that there was uninterrupted power supply for four hours.
Since there was relief from load shedding to some extent now because of the rain, it would be possible to streamline the supply.
The advantage of providing uninterrupted power supply for six hours a day was that the industry consumers had the option of purchasing power from private parties for the remaining hours. This would be finalised in a week, he said.
According to Southern India Mills’ Association, the TANGEDCO was providing uninterrupted power supply to five mills that had dedicated feeders here for 12 hours a day. This was implemented on a trial basis for the last one week. For the remaining hours, the mills could purchase power from other sources.
This was a welcome move because it brought down the power tripping.
K. Maniraj, president of Kovai Power Driven Pumps and Spares Manufacturers’ Association, said the TANGEDCO should try to provide uninterrupted supply for six hours a day to the industries as done in some of the southern districts.
