A 10,000-litre liquid oxygen plant has been installed at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital at a total cost of Rs. 27 lakh. It was commissioned on Thursday.

A centralised system that has been connected to 30 wards through pipelines, the plant would help the hospital reduce expenses in commercial purchase of oxygen cylinders.

It would remain operational 24 X 7.

Oxygen in the liquid form is stored at minus 183 degree Celsius inside this tank to provide 93 per cent pure oxygen for treatment. The pipelines are used to supply highly concentrated oxygen to intermediate cylinders placed at various locations. These cylinders would be transported to end-users.

This system would help the Intensive Coronary Care Unit, Intermediate Care Unit, causality ward, labour ward, and non-medical surgical wards.

The new system would help the hospital save nearly Rs. 40,000 every month, an official said.
