Distribution of lime juice twice a day has come as a welcome relief for traffic constables, who toil on the city roads braving summer.
In accordance with the announcement made by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pravesh Kumar ordered distribution of lime juice to constables twice a day — 11.30 a.m. and 3 p.m. — from Tuesday.
Assistant Commissioners of Police (Traffic) S. Ramakrishnan and Rajkanna, along with Inspectors C. Ayyarsamy and V. Saravanan, commenced the initiative by distributing the juice to 280 traffic constables who work at over 140 traffic junctions in two shifts. Reserve Sub-Inspectors handling traffic in each police station limits served the drink to constables at the traffic junctions.
The Government had recently reimbursed Rs.3 lakh and odd, the cost incurred for the distribution of juice last summer.
Hats
The police are also providing special hats for constables. The hats costing around Rs.250 comes with polystyrene, coir pith padding and adequate holes for ventilation. With the mercury levels soaring day by day, city police have planned to complete distribution of the hats in a day or two.
