Sometime ago the residents of Bharathipuram, off Avinashi Road near the Lakshmi Mills Junction, complained to the Corporation about a leaking pipeline that supplied ground water.

They wanted the leak plugged to prevent the wastage of water – the water was quite literally going down the nearby drain.

But now the residents regret alerting the Corporation about the leak because the latter has not attended to the complaint for about 10 days now and has left the road dug, hindering pedestrian and vehicle movement, complains E.M. Moorthy, a resident.

The dug portion is right next to the drain and a public tap. There is very little space at the place. Plus, at the dug portion, the protruding iron rods pose a real threat to those who use the stretch, he adds.

The leakage in the pipeline has affected the water supply to the residents and also to the nearby public toilets that the residents are dependent on. It has been a while since the water tank at the public toilet was filled, says N. Rangarajan, also a resident.

The women of the area say that the Corporation’s supply of drinking water too is not good. To fetch three or four pots of water, they will have to wait for about six hours, for such is the force with which water flows through the pipeline.

Not far away from the area, the Corporation has also failed to clear the garbage that had remained piled up for over a week, the residents complain. They want the civic body to attend to the repair work and improve hygiene at the earliest. Sources said that the Corporation engineers were on the job and that they will complete it in the next few days.
