Lawyers in the district on Thursday abstained from courts and formed a human chain from the District Sessions Court complex to the Railway Station road demanding the arrest of constable Muthupalaniappan on the charges of assault of Kalaiarasan, a lawyer, on Tuesday evening.

On Tuesday, Kalaiarasan was reportedly assaulted by the constable after a wordy duel that ended in exchange of blows over a dispute over right of way. Kalaiarasan was admitted to a hospital and a case was registered against the constable invoking six sections of the Indian Penal Code. Demanding his immediate arrest, the lawyers marched to the Police Commissioner's office and sat on the road on Wednesday. Later, they resolved to intensify the struggle.

They raised slogans against the police and held placards condemning the police for failing to arrest the constable and attempting to protect him.

The police have registered a case against 150 lawyers for defying the regulatory orders and marching towards the city police office and squatting on the road. The lawyers have decided to boycott courts on Friday and to take out a rally.
