The temple car festival of Koniamman Temple was a grand, peaceful affair on Wednesday.
The run up to the festival began a few days ago with the hoisting of the flag and followed by planting of the temple mast.
On Tuesday night, the ‘thirukalyanam’ was held in a grand, elaborate manner. It was followed by a music festival.
On Wednesday, the organisers of the temple car festival cleaned and readied the car, stationed on Raja Street.
They decorated the car, on which the deity was placed. Devotees who gathered in large numbers offered their prayers and got ready to pull the car.
By afternoon the temple car festival began with the pontiff of the Perur Mutt Santhalinga Ramasamy Adigalar pulling the temple car.
Several hundreds of devotees joined the pontiff, pulled the car through Raja Street, Oppnakkara Street to take it to the temple on Big Bazaar Street.
They again pulled it to the place of start on Raja Street.
To facilitate the smooth conduct of the festival the traffic police had made elaborate arrangements. The district administration had declared a local holiday.
