Kanimozhi tells student volunteers to be prepared to take on their roles

Appreciating students of Bharathiar University and its affiliated colleges who have come forward to work as volunteers in different committees of the World Classical Tamil Conference, Rajya Sabha MP and Secretary of the Academic Sessions Kanimozhi called for complete preparedness to take on their roles.

She was at the university here on Friday to formally release the video compact disc of the theme song of the conference.

Addressing student volunteers, she counselled them on the various nuances involved in handling the conference guests.

“This is a rare opportunity. Many of you do not know whether you will be able to witness an event of this magnitude. You are the ones who will bring freshness to the conference with your youth,” Ms. Kanimozhi said.

Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University C. Swaminathan said around 6,000 students were being involved in the conference activities.

“Students and teachers from various colleges had given suggestions for the theme of the floats and many from among them were selected. The students have also prepared explanatory notes that will be part of the floats. There will be 88 sessions at the conference. The arrangements of each session will be made by an affiliated college,” he said.

Free CDs of the theme song were distributed to participant students.

Earlier, Ms.Kanimozhi reviewed the preparations of the 40 floats at the VOC park grounds and also the arrangements for the conduct of various cultural events.

She pointed out that the floats would depict the Tamil culture, tradition, history, warfare, hospitality and scenes from the Tamil literature.

Tracing the evolution of folk arts and arts that were part of Tamil tradition, there would be performances of oyilattam, maanattam, mayilattam, paraiyattam, karakattam, kavadiattam, chikkattam, chakkai kuchi aatam, okkili kattai aatam, pambai aatam, bommalaatam, poikal kuthirai aatam, thudumbu aatam and thevaraatam .

These performances would be conducted as a prelude to the conference at various places including Jail grounds, Gandhipark, Corporation Auditorium, Vadavalli Marudhamalai Andavar Temple School ground, Sai Baba colony T.A. Ramalingam Chettiar School ground, Ganapathy CMS Matric. School ground, Uppipalayam NG Ramasamy School ground, Ramanathapuram Corporation Girls High School ground, Selvapuram Shristhi Vidyalaya, Kuniamuthur Government Higher Secondary School and Thudialur ITI ground.

Along with the cultural show, there would also be a food festival. Ms.Kanimozhi inspected all these places and gave suggestions to officials on stage arrangements. On Thursday, she inspected the CODISSIA fair grounds and reviewed the progress of erection of pandals and exhibition hall.
